Spring/Summer 09 Fashion Week Paris

28 01 2009

I planned on posting more on Paris Fashion week and the men’s fashion shows but my laptops charger is hanging by a thread right now (that thread being a wire that shocked me…don’t ask)  so for now check out a few looks I would love to either see in a spread or on my body.  Check out more here and cross your fingers I can find a new charger in the next few days so I no longer use it in the condition it’s in (seriously don’t ask).

Chris Rock Documentary “Good Hair” Premiers At Sundance

26 01 2009

204x600comedyopener

I was fortunate to see Chris Rock’s new documentary “Good Hair” at a screening in LA back in October so I was happy to hear that it is currently being shown at The Sundance Film Festival.  The films title is misleading and seems as though its centered around the topic of “good hair”, but is actually a great  documentary that touches on almost everything you can think of when it comes to black hair while still giving you Chris Rocks sense of humor .

I loved that the documentary was an honest reflection of the trials and tribulations black men and women go through with our hair and features honest discussions from regular people and celebrities ranging from Sanaa Lathan, Kerry Washington and even Al Sharpton (who was hilarious) on bad relaxer experiences, obsessions with weave, perceptions of women that wear natural hair, the lack of black owned hair companies and beauty supplies, hair show competitions, and even how hair is perceived in India where of course most weave derives from.

Make sure when the film is released to check it out.  I wish back when I was a freshman in college answering the inevitable “How do you wash your hair” questions to my white roommate and her friends this film was out so I could have just handed it to them to answer all their questions and more.

A New America

21 01 2009

“The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness. In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned.” ~ PRESIDENT Barack Obama

jna206

Today nothing mattered to me except taking in every moment of history as Barack Obama became the 44th President, which still makes me want to cry every time I think about it. All day it felt like everyone I talked to was inspired to do more, to want to be their best, to start projects they have been putting off or find ways to volunteer their time. The quote above really said it all for me. My new motto is “We understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned.”

The moment that really hit me during his Inauguration Speech was with this quote:

“This is the meaning of our liberty and our creed — why men and women and children of every race and every faith can join in celebration across this magnificent mall, and why a man whose father less than sixty years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath.

Here are a few of my favorite images from the day. For more coverage, videos and pictures check out Thehuffingtonpost.

Well I’ll Be…

I actually really like this spread from the February issue of US Vogue, not surprisingly though considering it was shot by Steven Meisel. I still don’t know if that’s enough to get me to buy the issue but they are making baby steps in that direction. This spread is gorgeous though, I love the vintage, Parisian feel and of course the fact that it features Liya and Jourdan. Now only if they can make a habit of spreads like this.

Give Me Good Face

After I saw this picture of model Lara Stone in a May 2008 Vogue Paris spread, she became one of my favorite models.  I love a versatile model and can’t really think of anyone more versatile out right now.  We will be able to see just how versatile she is soon because she will be gracing an entire upcoming issue of Vogue Paris.  Check out some pics of Ms. Versatility below:

What I Want From YOU—Is To Stop Making Me Cry!

15 01 2009

parade

Obama always makes me bring on the waterworks like no one I know. I thought I would be able to make it until his Inauguration before he did something to make me tear up but noooooooooooooooooooooo, he went and brought those tear things to my eyes by posting a beautiful letter to Sasha and Malia in Parade Magazine. Click here to read it and check out the quote that made that thing they call tears to my eyes:

When I was a young man, I thought life was all about me-about how I’d make my way in the world, become successful, and get the things I want. But then the two of you came into my world with all your curiosity and mischief and those smiles that never fail to fill my heart and light up my day. And suddenly, all my big plans for myself didn’t seem so important anymore. I soon found that the greatest joy in my life was the joy I saw in yours. And I realized that my own life wouldn’t count for much unless I was able to ensure that you had every opportunity for happiness and fulfillment in yours. In the end, girls, that’s why I ran for President: because of what I want for you and for every child in this nation.”

He COULD have got it

13 01 2009

There is something very he can get it about Chris Brown until he starts doing ish like this.  I can just imagine him trying to turn you on by dancing for you but instead of doing something nice and slow and sexy he starts gliding across the floor crumping and popping and doing all kinds of hand moves.  Yeah, now that I think about it I’ll reserve that he can get it talk for about 5 years or so when he hopefully brings it down a notch.  Check out Mr Way To Blow The Mood Brown dance to Single Ladies.

Speaking of he can get it, please tell me I wasn’t the only one googling Army Staff Sgt. Derrick Brooks today after seeing him act as a stand in for Obama’s Inauguration Ceremony.

On A Natural High….

13 01 2009

I can’t even begin to tell you how much I love seeing the hair donned by Ubah Hassan for Vogue Italia and the one and only Jourdan Dunn for Elle France.  I’m not crazy about the looks on Jourdan but the fro makes up for it.

So I’m Not Alone

6 01 2009

I never knew the correct term for magazine spreads and pictures that were one step away from looking like a high end American Apparel ad so I’m glad a site I came across, Supremefreak, gave me a way to describe them as “high fashion porn“.

I don’t know what it is about nekid fashion pictures but I just love them.  Show me a magazine like Maxim though and I just don’t see a comparison.    Anyways, click here to check out the definite NFWS site that features nothing but “high fashion porn” and check out a few below that are kind of safe for work if your job is cool with “high fashion porn“.  I just love saying that.
