Janet Jackson, Michelle Obama and The Wire Cast Magazine Covers

21 02 2008

I am loving these Janet Jackson covers for the April issue of Vibe magazine!  I’m a Janet fan, and when I mean fan I mean in elementary school, I wore this fake ponytail(while at home) and would pretend I was her circa Rhythm Nation. I cannot wait for her new CD Discipline to drop, its supposed to be classic Janet, and thankfully not Janet 20 Years Old….I couldn’t get past the first song on that one.

I’m loving the Michael Jackson Off the Wall  feel of this cover, although they should have recreated the Thriller album cover since it’s the 25 year anniversary this year.

Michelle Obama is on the newest cover of Newsweek Magazine where she discusses being Obama’s rock and her role as an aspiring First Lady.  Doesn’t this picture remind you of former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy? For the full article, click here.

The cast of The Wire covers the newest issue of Giant Magazine to discuss their final season.  I will not tell what happened in this weeks episode, but I’m super disappointed in how it went down.

New Usher….Moving Mountains and Love in the Club

21 02 2008

Maybe I’m just tired, but I’m not feeling it….at all. Both songs just made me more tired than I already am. I’m not an R&B person as it is, mainly because it seems like every song sounds like the same Ike(just had a What’s Love Got To Do With It moment). R&B songs always seem to be about 3 things:your happy and in love, you are either missing someone or they cheated on you, and lastly there is always something random about a club. As far as I could tell I was 2/3 with these songs.

I guess Young Jeezy is featured on the Love in the Club song, but I didn’t get that far so I wouldn’t know. For all I know Biggie and Tupac could have all new verses on that song and I’ll never know because I don’t think I’ll ever get that far.

Donyale Luna..The First Black Model

21 02 2008

I had to get one last tidbit on Black History Month in before the month ended, but of course I don’t need to save these for the month of February so expect more. Before Beverly Johnson and Iman made their mark in the fashion world, there was the first noted black model, Donyale Luna.

Donyale moved from Detroit to New York to pursue modeling and became the first black model on the cover of Vogue in 1966. Her hand is shown covering her face on the cover to not offend the regular readers at the time.

At only 20 years old,”Time” magazine called 1966 “The Luna Year” after Donyale due to her tall, thin frame and frequent use of blue contacts and a blond wig that they related to a moon that would “remain on high for many a season”.

The media’s interest in her mixed heritage made her uncomfortable and she was known for being secretive with the subject.

Unprofessional behavior resulted in the decline of her career, and a drug overdose resulted in her death in 1979. Ironically she has unintentionally opened the doors for black models that have come after her although she attempted to distance herself from the community throughout her life.
