Have camera phones made us lose our damn minds?

16 02 2008

While reading more news on the Northern Illinois University shooting, I saw this picture in a slideshow. Do you notice anything that just doesn’t seem right with this image?

How about the fact that someone found the need to bust out their camera phone and snap a picture of a fellow students body in the event of the tragedy, which obviously just occurred at the time. Is this where technology and camera phones have brought us to? To not have enough common sense to know better than to take a picture of something like this? For what? Did he not see the news crews around that were obviously getting the shot he was going for?

I’m totally guilty of using a camera phone, but I prefer to use mine more for the use of explicit pictures and capturing people wearing crazy things that I just have to send to my friends, which is what camera phones were made for right?

I remember when Heath Ledger died there was an image of people outside of the apartment he died in ready and waiting with their camera phones for their first shot of his remains to be carried out…. body bag, stretcher and all.

Its almost second nature to people I guess in the age of youtube and all that if you see something news worthy to break out your camera phone or video. After all, you could probably find anything on youtube which means instead of helping someone out, there is always that one person that instead thinks they are doing their good deed by taking a picture or video. All I have to say is, lets stick to capturing grown women on the train listening to their iPod and playing full air guitar(….I’ll be posting that video one of these days, now THAT was a good reason to bust out the video phone!)
